Kerner Estate: Kerner Estate is a small, family-run winery, nestled at the juncture of the Wairau and Waihopai Rivers in Marlborough, a gorgeous spot at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Kerner Estate was established by Joanne and Bruce Kerner in 2000 with a mission to produce limited quantities of high-quality wines that capture the fresh, vibrant fruit flavours for which the Marlborough region is so celebrated.
2009 Kerner Estate Sauvignon Blanc: The fruit for this Sauvignon was hand-picked on April 9th 2009 from our estate vineyard which surrounds our house in the Fareham Road area of Marlborough.
The vineyard is located at the western end of the Wairau Valley, an area that suits the styles of wines we like. Because it is slightly elevated and is some distance from the sea the temperatures are cooler, meaning the grapes ripen slower, retaining and intensifying the flavour of the grapes.
After hand-picking the bunches were whole-cluster pressed and the juice run to both tanks and French oak barriques for fermentation. For the barrel portion we allowed the native yeast from the vineyard to complete the ferment, using these indigenous yeasts to help give greater complexity to the wine.
The ferment proceeded slowly in the cool cellar, and the wine was then left on the yeast lees, the dead yeast cells, for another four months. These lees help to give the wine more weight and depth, and also protect it from oxygen as it ages.
The wine shows a range of fruit characters, more in the riper tropical spectrum, as this is the style that we prefer, something with richness and texture. The barrel notes are not obvious, but definitely give extra weight and complexity on the palate, without adding coarseness. The combined characters of passionfruit, some grapefruit, and hints of blackcurrant make this wine flavourful, while retaining an elegant structure. - Kerner Estate
