Tasting note: A small, 11-acre vineyard planted in clay and limestone soils has produced the finest Carlmagnus I have ever tasted. Made from 100% Merlot cropped at 35 hectoliters per hectare, and with what must be nearly 15% alcohol, this dense purple-hued 2009 offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including blackberries, blueberries, licorice, graphite, and incense. Full-bodied, rich, and opulent, this wine will drink well young, yet age nicely for 10-15 years. (Tasted two times.) (88-90*pts. RP, Wine Advocate)
