Tasting note: Sancerre has become synonymous with summer as the form of Sauvignon Blanc and deservedly so. Unfortunately, it has become a victim of its own success with prices pushing north of $25 a bottle. There are a number of satellite appellations near Sancerre that make Sauvignon Blanc of varying quality. Many of these wines are sadly nondescript, but we found one with character and the essence of a great Sancerre. From the fantastic vervy 2007 vintage in the Loire, it is made in small quantities by Jacques Lurton, prodigious worldwide winemaking scion of the famous Bordeaux family. We enjoyed a fragrant, forward lime nose with tropical fruits, zippy attack, with some creaminess on the midpalate of this refreshing wine. There is a pleasant touch of freshly cut grass and chives on the clean finish.
