Laurent Betton St. Joseph is a classically pure, traditional Northern Rhone Syrah. Betton created his domaine in 1988 after having studied with some of the most prestigious growers in the area, including Jean-Michel Gerin of Cote Rôtie. Today he owns 4 hectares total, 2.5 in St. Joseph near the northern town of Chavanay. These are more complicate, darker and more structured wines than many other wines of the St. Joseph appellation, combining some of the class of Hermitage, the volume of Cote Rôtie and the sauvage of Cornas. Strict selection of the best fruit begins by hand harvesting. The use of stems provides earthiness and structure while the partial whole cluster fermentation makes the wine lusher and fruitier. The wines are aged 12 months in one to five year old barrels and cement. While Betton’s wines can certainly develop even more complexity over time, the 2007 vintage is more open than previous ones, yielding an accessible wine with slightly softer edges at the moment, making it the perfect serious not so serious summer red
