Over the course of several tastings this year, the 2007 Kanzem (town), Altenberg(vineyard), Kabinett(ripeness not sweetness) made by von Othegraven(Dr. Heidi Kegel, niece of Maria von Othegraven) in the Saar River valley kept standing out, so we had to procure a stash. The high notes on the nose are ethereal and haunting and could only come from one very specific and special place on earth. Accordingly, this vineyard is classified an Erste Lage or Grand Cru vineyard by The Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter or VDP for short. Altenberg is truly the centerpiece for the Von Othegraven estate. It is monumentally the steepest of the steep vineyards, giving the grapes the best south-south-westerly exposure for ripeness. Blue Devon slate is the base here with traces of iron oxide rendering the subsoil shimmering red-brown and the wines tightly wound with minerality. This is a noble wine with many paradoxical complexities: intense and concentrated without being heavy; warm and embracing but low in alcohol. Balance: a wine of innate greatness, at Zen with itself.
The price is absurdly cheap considering the price of Grand Cru white burgundy and less than the prices of most Grosse Gewachs Rieslings. If you are a fan of Austrian Riesling and find some German Riesling to be too sweet, this might be a great wine for you, the deft balance of the rich 2007 vintage combined with the high acidity and minerality of the Saar make for fairly dry impression on the palate. The 2007 Altenberg Kabinett is probably drier yet with more density than most Kabinetts.
