Vintage: 2005 Format: 750ml Wine Name: Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vineyard: Designation: Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz Appellation: Chateauneuf-du-Pape Producer: Le Clos du Caillou Varietal: Red Rhone Blend Type: Red Country: France Region: Rhone Sub-Region: Southern Rhone Alcohol:
Tasting note: Bright purple. Room-filling bouquet of seductive red and dark berry preserves, along with sexy incense and fresh floral qualities. Much fresher than last year's showing, with deep, sweet raspberry and candied blackberry flavors, silky tannins and a brisk, energetic finish. This has remarkable clarity and cling. Built to last but there'd be no crime in drinking it now. (93pts. JR, Stephen Tanzers International Wine Cellar)
Tasted: Jan/Feb 2008 Score: 93 Drink: N/A
Tasting note: This delivers mouthfilling mocha, blackberry confiture, fig paste and licorice flavors, along with loamy tannins and lots of bittersweet cocoa and coffee on the finish. Despite its heft, it is polished and driven, showing the strength of this great vintage. Best from 2009 through 2032. 1,000 cases made. (95pts. JM, Wine Spectator)

Tasting note: Crushed rocks, spring flowers, black cherries, raspberries, and cassis all make an appearance in the gorgeous dark ruby/purple-colored 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz. This impeccably well-made effort possesses the most minerality, and is a distinctive expression of Chateauneuf du Pape. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following two decades. Kudos to Sylvie Vacheron, who is carrying on the legacy of her husband, Jean-Denis Vacheron, after his untimely death in 2001. Working with noted oenologist, Bruno Gaspard, this estate has rebounded from that tragedy with some brilliant efforts in both their Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape selections. The renowned southern Rhone oenologist, Philippe Cambie, also keeps an eye on things here, so there is quite a brain trust in operation for this estate tucked away in the northeast corner of the appellation, just across the winding road from Beaucastel. (93pts. Robert Parker)
