Vintage: 2003 Format: 1.5L (Single OWCs) Wine Name: Les Granits Vineyard: Les Granits Designation: Appellation: St. Joseph Producer: M. Chapoutier Varietal: Syrah Type: Red Country: France Region: Rhone Sub-Region: Northern rhone Alcohol:
Tasting note: Dark and beefy, with a note of game running through the black currant, coffee and tar flavors. This unwinds more on the finish, with a fine mineral thread running through currant and cocoa notes. Drink now through 2010. (93pts JM, Wine Spectator)
Tasted: May 15, 2006 Score: 93 Drink: Through 2010
Tasting note: Mineral-dominated with surprisingly fine acidity for the vintage is the dense purple-colored 2003 St.-Joseph Les Granits. A glorious bouquet of spring flowers, blackberries, raspberries, crushed rocks, and truffles is followed by a dense, full-bodied, powerful, tannic, backward St.-Joseph. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following two decades. (93pts Robert Parker)
Tasted: Feb. 2006 Score: 93 Drink: 2008-28
Tasting note:Bright, saturated ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black cherry, cassis, woodsmoke, licorice and mint; a bit porty but much more expressive today than the Varonniers. Large-scaled, full and sweet, with highly concentrated, rather oaky flavors of licorice, woodsmoke and mint. A distinct step up in texture from the Varonniers. Chapoutier harvested these vines on August 31, then finished up with Hermitage in the first days of September. (89-92pts Steven Tanzer)
Tasted: Jan./Feb. 2005 Score: 89-92 Drink: N/A
