Vintage: 2003 Format: 1.5L(Single OWCs) Wine Name: Les Varonniers Vineyard: Designation: Les Varonniers Appellation: Crozes-Hermitage Producer: M. Chapoutier Varietal: Syrah Type: Red Country: France Region: Rhone Sub-Region: Northern Rhone Alcohol:
Tasting note: Very ripe, but racy too, with dark blackberry, fig and boysenberry flavors running along bittersweet cocoa and mineral notes. Long, fleshy, dark fruit?filled finish has a great minerally spine. Drink now through 2012. (92pts JM, Wine Spectator)
Tasted: May 15, 2006 Score: 92 Drink: Through 2012
Tasting note: The 2003 Crozes-Hermitage Les Varonniers (600 cases produced) boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a big, smoky perfume of road tar, scorched earth, blackberries, grilled meats, herbs, and spice box. Dense, opulent, full-bodied, chewy, and rich, it should evolve for 15 or more years, but be drinkable during that entire period given its low acidity, huge glycerin, and up-front style. (93pts Robert Parker)
Tasted: Feb. 2006 Score: 93 Drink: 2008-29
