Tasting note: Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. (99pts Robert Parker)

Tasting note: Ultraconcentrated, with layers and layers of fruit and superfine tannins. Plenty of fruit, mineral and meat character. Full-bodied yet refined and classy, it coats your palate with gorgeous fruit and ripe tannins. Truly superb. One of the wines of the vintage. (98pts JS, Wine Spectator)

Tasting note: I just tasted Chateau Margaux 2003 again in the bottle: a pure delight! And yet, bottling took place on August 17th! During the ageing period, it presented a slightly stiff tannic touch, but it disappeared now. The colour is very intense and the nose extremely delicate, very fruity, complex and almost creamy. A feeling of power and density seems to emanate from the wine. On the palate, the wine presents an uninterrupted succession of delights: delicate pulp, sophisticated tannic support, total occupation of the mid-palate, subtle opulence, a powerful and caressing finish, a great sappy and flavoursome persistency. This wine is absolutely irresistible. (97.5pts Jean Marc Quarin)

Tasting note: Bright, full ruby. Very pure, highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, boysenberry, minerals, dark chocolate and violet. Densely packed but pure and perfumed in the mouth; at once suave and penetrating. Offers outstanding mouth coverage and great class. Finishes with extremely fine-grained tannins and extraordinary length and breadth, without losing any of its definition and purity. A great Margaux in the making. (94-98pts Steven Tanzer)
