Vintage: 2003 Format: 1.5L Wine Name: Chateau Kirwan Vineyard: Designation: Appellation: Margaux Producer: Chateau Kirwan Varietal: Red Bordeaux Blend Type: Red Country: France Region: Bordeaux Sub-Region: Medoc Alcohol:
Tasting note: Good deep red. Red raspberry, roast coffee and an overlay of toasty oak on the nose. Sweet and inviting, with supple, fresh red fruit flavors and a seamless texture. Finishes with good breadth and sneaky persistence, with fruit that coats the palate. This has turned out very well. (89pts. Stephen Tanzer)

Tasting note: This estate has been producing impressive wines since the mid-1990s, and much of the credit goes to the talented proprietress, Sophie Schyler. The 2003 Kirwan is a beauty and gets my vote as the finest Kirwan made in the last quarter century. A beautiful bouquet of forest floor, plums, licorice, creme de cassis, and smoke emerges from this opaque ruby/purple-tinged effort. Medium-bodied with plenty of sweet tannin in addition to low acidity, it leaves a beautiful tactile impression that is concentrated yet fresh and lively. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022+. (93pts. Robert Parker)

Tasting note: Classy aromas of blackberry, Indian spice and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with wonderfully integrated tannins and a long, caressing finish. A real beauty here. Best after 2010. 5,665 cases made. (92pts. JS, Wine Spectator)

Tasting note: Colour: A very beautiful dark red; beautiful and intense. First nose: Well defined. Delicate; lots of fruit. A delicate hint of plum and raspberry. After swirling: lots of vanilla with a touch of cocoa and chocolate. Palate: You can hardly call this a Margaux style palate, yet it definitely tastes very good! Flavours of candied plum combined with a very round and charming body with a touch of wood get hold of the palate, then start to melt deliciously on the tongue, without any of the tannic stiffness which other vintages in this estate sometimes display. And indeed, a very lovely aroma now becomes perceptible. Excellent sappy length. A confirmed success. (88.75pts. Jean-Marc Quarin)
