Tasting note: With its delicate, aromatic nose of flowers, spices, minerals and menthol, the 2001 Sori Tildin is less overtly lush than Costa Russi, offering much delineation in its elegant macerated cherry fruit and tar flavors, with greater length, fine tannins and exceptional overall balance. It is always the most nuanced and classic of the Gaja single-vineyard wines. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2023. (95 pts. AG, Wine Advocate)

Tasting note: Deep red-ruby. A bit less exuberant on the nose than the Cos ta Russi, hinting at plum, mocha, chocolate, underbrush and minerals. Very suave on entry, then brooding, classy and young, with far more primary black fruit and licorice flavors than the nose suggests. Less showy today than the Costa Russi but perhaps even longer, with more powerful tannins. This really calls for at least seven or eight years of additional bottle aging. (94+ pts. Tasting note: Dark ruby red. Loads of porcini aromas and some raisin and spices. Then turns to flowers. Full-bodied, superconcentrated and supertannic. This is such a baby, but there's loads of everything here. From berry, vanilla to raspberry and blackberry. A wine to age for a very long time. Even better than I remember.--1997 Italian blind retrospective. Best after 2012. 800 cases made. (97 pts. JS, Wine Spectator)
