Vintage: 1997 Format: 750ml Wine Name: Marcassin Chardonnay Vineyard: Gauer Ranch Upper Barn Designation: Appellation: Alexander Valley Producer: Marcassin Varietal: Chardonnay Type: White Country: USA Region: California Sub-Region: Sonoma County Alcohol:
Tasting note: A rich, intense, multifaceted wine with layers of ripe and spicy pear, fig, apricot and buttery notes. Long, complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2005. 275 cases made. (93pts. JL, Wine Spectator)
Tasted: Sept. 30, 2001 Score: 93 Drink: Through 2005
Tasting note: There are nearly 250 cases of the 1997 Chardonnay Gauer Ranch Upper Barn. This wine offers a compelling waxy, honeyed citrus, subtle toasty, lusty nose, followed by a full-bodied, fabulously concentrated mouthful of leesy, multi-layered Chardonnay exhibiting honeyed grapefruit, citrus, and mineral flavors. A powerful, multi-dimensional, long (nearly a minute) finish adds to this Chardonnay's prodigious characteristics. It should drink well for 7-8 years. (release date 3/00) (96pts. Robert Parker)
Tasted: Jan. 2000 Score: 96 Drink: Through 2008
Tasting note: Fuller hazy yellow. Deeper, more exotic aromas of tropical fruits and roasted nuts; quite showy today. Thick, lush and chewy; this has the depth of flavor and three-dimensional texture typical of the Marcassin wines. Closed up in the glass. Finishes longer and stronger than the Lorenzo bottling. (94pts. Stephen Tanzer)
Tasted: May/June 2000 Score: 94 Drink: N/A
