Tasting note: Dried plums, spices and cherries on the nose. Full-bodied, with ripe and round fruit, silky tannins and a caressing finish. Best after 2002. 620 cases made. (90pts. JS, Wine Spectator)
Tasted: Nov. 30, 2001
Score: 90
Drink: After 2002
Tasting note: The 1997 Barolo Mariondino, from a vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, possesses a dense ruby/purple color, lots of tannin and structure, notes of earth, black cherry jam, smoke, coffee, licorice, and soy, outstanding concentration, and a spicy, long finish. The fat and glycerin found in many 1997s is present, but is buttressed by obvious tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020. (90pts. Robert Parker)
Tasted: Jun. 2001
Score: 90
Drink: 2003-20
Tasting note: Full, deep red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, licorice and roasted nuts; suggestion of medicinal austerity. More precise and shapely than the Piccole Vigne; firm tannic spine and sound acids give the flavors good grip. Moderately ripe finishing fruit is currently overshadowed by the wine oak. (89+pts. Steven Tanzer)
Tasted: Nov/Dec 2000
Score: 89+
