Tasting note: 1989 was a difficult year for north coast cabernet, but the ’89 Mayacamas has turned out quite well, and really is a most impressive example of this vintage. The bouquet is a bit “cool” in its aromatic profile, with the notes of bell pepper playing an equal role alongside the black cherries, to augment notes of tobacco ash, coffee beans, a great base of stony soil tones and emerging notes of chipotle peppers. On the palate the wine is medium-full, deep and complex, with tangy acids providing the wine with great bounce and focus, and good length and grip on the intensely flavored and quite complex finish. The ’89 Mayacamas does not have the customary core of sweet fruit in reserves as found in most ripe vintages, but it does deliver all of the complexity and breed that are the hallmarks of this great wine.
